A stroll in Drammen
Would you like to stroll around in Drammen? Here are some tips.
Bragernes Square
Bragernes Square is located in Drammen center and is Scandinavia's largest square. This is the city's meeting place, teeming with life all year round. There are flower and vegetable stalls, concerts, political meetings, festivals, artificial ice track in the winter, street theater - and much more. The atmosphere here is special.
Around the square are cafes with outdoor seating in summer. Cozy, small shops and pleasant shopping centers provide opportunities for shopping. If you are lucky it is "Farmers Market", where you can buy local food and drinks from nearby farms.
Bragernes Square is used for the city's folk feasts. Here, the World Cup in ski sprint is arranged - a spectacular ski and folk festival for audiences and TV viewers in many countries. The river festival - the big event of the summer - also takes place here, with outdoor concerts featuring world-class artists, fun fair, boat race, exhibitions and amusements during the dragon boat competition on the river.
Around the Drammen river: approx. 40 minutes walk
You start the tour at Bragernes Square. Here are Bragernes Church, Drammen Town Hall with its two distinctive towers and market stalls. Go down to the Town Bridge and onto the river front up the river until you reach the modern bridge "Ypsilon". In 2008 the bridge won "European Steel Bridges Award". Walk a little past the bridge, here you will find a large steel ball - and a similar ball is on the other side of river. This is the art work "Elveharpen", which makes sound from fluctuations in the bridge.
Cross the bridge, you may see people fishing along the river or kayak paddlers. This will take you to the trendy Union Brygge, with marina, stylish cafes, modern apartments, cultural arena Union Scene and Papirbredden - Drammen Knowledge Park, with libraries and colleges. Continue on the promenade down the river, enjoy the views and river life. Go down to the Town Bridge, cross the bridge and you're back at Bragernes Square .
